About China
The People’s Republic of China is the third-largest country in the world, with an area of 9.7 million square kilometres. It is situated on the west shore of the Pacific Ocean. The population of the PRC is 1.45 billion now.
China is a republic, which means that it has a government system built on majority rule. This means that only a few top officials represent most of the population. There is no one-party regime in China, which gives the country more freedom.
The Chinese national flag is a red field with five golden stars. The red of the field symbolizes the communist revolution, and the five stars symbolize the unity of the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
The flag was designed by Zeng Liansong, a citizen from Wenzhou. The Peoples Liberation Army hoisted the first flag on a pole overlooking Tiananmen on October 1, 1949, at a ceremony announcing the founding of the Peoples Republic.
