Peking University's School of Advanced Materials in Shenzhen is admitting international Master's and PhD students for 2027. Chinese-taught deadline 25 December 2026; English-taught 31 March 2027.

Peking University (北京大学) is admitting international students for 2027 to the Master's and PhD programs of its School of Advanced Materials, based at the Shenzhen Graduate School campus. Selection combines a document review with a re-examination. Chinese-taught applications close on 25 December 2026 and English-taught applications on 31 March 2027.
What the programs offer
The School of Advanced Materials was founded in 2013 on PKU's Shenzhen campus. Its research covers carbon materials, energy materials and materials genome engineering, organic photovoltaics and display materials, new-concept materials, and materials for health. For 2027 it offers two programs to international students.
| Degree | Program | Length | Language | Tuition (CNY/year) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PhD | Materials Science and Engineering | 4–5 years | Chinese or English | 40,000 |
| Master's | Materials and Chemical Engineering | 3 years | Chinese or English | 33,000 |
Strong bachelor's graduates in science or engineering can apply straight to the PhD, which then runs for five years.
Who can apply
- Non-Chinese citizens with a valid foreign passport. Former Chinese citizens must, in principle, have held a foreign passport or nationality certificate since before 30 April 2021 and show proof that Chinese nationality was given up.
- Good physical and mental health, good conduct and no criminal record.
- Master's: a bachelor's degree from an institution recognised by China's Ministry of Education.
- PhD: a master's degree, or an outstanding bachelor's degree for direct entry.
- Chinese-taught study: HSK 6 with at least 200 points and a writing score of 65 or more (an HSK 7–9 report with writing of 65 or more also works).
- English-taught study: any one of TOEFL iBT 100 (tests from 1 September 2025 to 20 January 2026) or 5 on the new scale (from 21 January 2026), GRE 315, IELTS Academic 6.5, a pass in PETS-5, TEM-4 or TEM-8, a degree taught in English, or a first-author SCI paper written in English.
Documents you need
- Degree certificates with a degree authentication report. Degrees from outside mainland China normally need a report from the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE). Final-year students upload an expected-graduation or enrolment letter instead.
- Official transcripts, original or notarised, in Chinese or English.
- A personal statement focused on your research plan, in the language of your program: about 1,500 words for Master's and 3,000 for PhD, using PKU's template.
- A CV and the signed Application Commitment Letter.
- Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors in your field, submitted through the online system.
- Your HSK, TOEFL, GRE, IELTS or other language evidence.
- Bio-data pages of every ordinary passport you have used since 30 April 2021; the current one must stay valid at least three months after enrolment.
- A list of publications with abstracts, if you have any.
Everything must be a clear colour scan from a scanner. Phone photos are rejected, and the passport details you enter cannot be changed later.
How selection works
- Apply on PKU's international student online system, upload your documents and pay CNY 800 per program.
- The school checks eligibility and passes complete files to the Shenzhen Graduate School's academic affairs office.
- An expert panel reviews grades, academic background and research potential, then shortlists candidates for re-examination.
- Re-examinations run in batches from January to April 2027. The school posts the format and schedule on its website.
- PKU publishes the provisional admission list before the end of May 2027.
- Provisionally admitted students mail the printed application form and original documents (not the degree certificate or reference letters) to the school's admissions office in Shenzhen by 31 May 2027.
- Admission letters and the JW201/JW202 visa form are issued from late June 2027.
Tuition and scholarships
- Chinese Government Scholarship, High-Level Graduate Program: full or partial tuition waiver, on-campus housing, medical insurance and a monthly allowance at the official rate.
- School of Advanced Materials Scholarship: for admitted students who do not receive the government award.
- The school's website also lists Shenzhen Graduate School and Guangdong provincial scholarships. University and school awards cannot be held together, but provincial and city awards can be added.
