Tongji University Admissions 2027: Deadlines, Fees and Requirements

Tongji University (同济大学) in Shanghai has published its 2027 application calendar for international students, from bachelor's and postgraduate degrees to language, pre-university and exchange study. If you want a Chinese Government Scholarship for a master's or PhD, the date to watch is 20 December 2026. Bachelor's applications run from 10 December 2026 to 31 March 2027.

Who can apply at each level

Bachelor's

• Graduates of a regular, full-time high school. Online or equivalency qualifications are not accepted.
• Age 17 to 25 for scholarship applicants and 17 to 35 for self-funded applicants.
• Every undergraduate applicant, funded or not, must upload a CSCA score report. Required subjects depend on the major, and English-taught applicants sit Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in English. Our CSCA exam dates guide lists the sittings.
• English-taught majors: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85, unless you are a native speaker or attended an English-medium high school. Chinese-taught majors: HSK 5 with at least 180.
• Applicants under 18 on 31 August 2027 need a guardian living in mainland China with a stable income.

Master's and PhD

• Master's: a bachelor's degree, and no older than 35 (scholarship) or 45 (self-funded).
• PhD: a master's degree, and no older than 40 (scholarship) or 50 (self-funded).
• English-taught programmes: TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.0, or proof that your previous degree or job used English. Chinese-taught programmes: HSK 5 (180+), with stricter HSK and HSKK scores for International Chinese Language Education.

Scholarships you can target

• Chinese Government Scholarship, Type B (agency 10247): tuition, insurance, campus housing and a monthly allowance of CNY 3,000 (master's) or CNY 3,500 (PhD). Apply on both the CSC portal and Tongji's system by 23:59 Beijing time on 20 December 2026.
• Shanghai Government Scholarship: Category A adds a CNY 2,500, 3,000 or 3,500 monthly allowance (bachelor's, master's, PhD) to free tuition, insurance and housing; Category B covers tuition and insurance. It is not open to English-taught bachelor's programmes.
• Tongji International Student Excellence Scholarship: for PhD students, exchange students and English-taught bachelor's students with strong records, including high CSCA scores for undergraduates.

Documents you need

1. Passport information page, valid until at least 1 March 2028.
2. Highest diploma and degree certificate (final-year students: an expected-graduation letter), with notarised translations if not in Chinese or English.
3. Complete transcripts.
4. Language certificate, or proof of English- or Chinese-medium study.
5. Personal statement on Tongji's template, written in the programme's teaching language.
6. Postgraduates: two recommendation letters from associate professors or above, with contact details.
7. Foreigner physical examination form completed within the last six months.
8. Undergraduates: CSCA score report. Optional extras such as a supervisor's acceptance letter or awards help.

How to apply, step by step

1. Choose one major from Tongji's 2027 catalogue, which lists tuition and CSCA subjects. You may apply for only one.
2. Register on Tongji's online application system and fill in your education history from primary school onward.
3. Upload colour scans and pay the CNY 600 fee online. Paper or emailed documents are not processed.
4. If you pass the first check, your school may invite you to an online interview.
5. Self-funded applicants offered pre-admission pay the first year's tuition within two weeks to confirm their place.
6. Download the admission notice and JW202 form, apply for your visa and register in late August or early September 2027.

Tips for Bangladeshi applicants

• Register with a non-Gmail address. Tongji warns that Gmail users may not receive the verification code.
• Postgraduates chasing the CSC award should submit before 20 December 2026; see our CSC scholarship guide. The March window suits self-funded and Shanghai-scholarship applicants.
• Bachelor's applicants need a CSCA score before 31 March 2027, so book an early sitting now.
• Get the medical form done within six months of applying, and bring all originals when you register.
