Tsinghua International School Admissions 2027–28: Fees, Grades, Steps

Tsinghua International School (THIS), the international division of Tsinghua University High School (清华大学附属中学国际部) in Beijing, has opened admissions for the 2027–2028 school year. It takes Grade 1 entrants and a limited number of transfer students in Grades 2–11. Admission is rolling, and the school suggests applying no later than May 2027.

What the school offers

THIS opened in 2009 as part of Tsinghua University High School and shares that campus and its academic resources. It runs a continuous 12-year programme: Grades 1–5 are primary, Grades 6–8 middle school and Grades 9–12 high school. The school says it has students from more than 20 countries and regions and a student–teacher ratio of about 1:5.

  • Primary pupils learn through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which is organised around themes.
  • High school students can choose from more than 20 Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
  • Chinese is a required subject at every level, from Grade 1 to Grade 12.
  • The school is accredited by WASC, certified by the College Board and is a test centre for AP, ACT and SAT.
  • A SIGMA track is planned for students who are strong in mathematics and science. Its eligibility, ages and test dates will appear in a separate brochure.

Who can apply

  • Children holding a foreign passport, such as a Bangladeshi passport, with a valid Chinese visa page. Permanent residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan can also apply.
  • Grade 1 applicants must be at least six years old by 31 August 2027.
  • Transfer applicants for Grades 2–11 are accepted only while places last. Students finishing Grade 6 in a local public school are usually advised to apply for Grade 7.
  • Applications for Grade 12 are not accepted.

Documents you need

  1. Passport identification page and a valid Chinese visa page.
  2. A recent colour passport-style photo (3.3 cm × 4.8 cm).
  3. School reports or transcripts: the past year for Grade 2, the past two years for Grades 3–8, and all records since Grade 9 for Grades 9–11.
  4. Teacher recommendations: one for Grade 1, two for other grades. Teachers complete them online through a link the portal sends.
  5. The school recommendation form (Grades 1–6) or student background form (Grades 7–11).
  6. Immunisation record.
  7. Awards or certificates, if any.
  8. Copies of both parents' identity documents and their degree certificates (bachelor's level and above).

Upload copies with the online application and bring the originals to the in-person interview.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Apply online. Use the THIS OpenApply portal, linked under Admissions on the school website. The email you register with becomes your account for tracking the application.
  2. Upload the documents. Complete the form and add transcripts and recommendation requests.
  3. First call. An admissions officer phones you to discuss the application and answer questions.
  4. Assessment. After the file is reviewed, your child sits an on-campus potential assessment covering English listening, speaking, reading and writing. Grade 7 and above also take mathematics, and children whose first language is not Chinese take a Chinese test. Grade 1 applicants who pass join a short sample class and skip the family interview. Results stay valid for six months.
  5. Family interview. Strong candidates for Grades 2–11 and their parents are invited to an interview about a week later.
  6. Decision. The admissions office sends the result by email once every step is complete.

For most grades the assessment stage takes two to three weeks. Grade 1 takes longer because sample classes need a group of applicants. Small weekday campus tours can be booked through the portal.

Tips for Bangladeshi families

  • THIS suits families who live, or will live, in Beijing, for example parents posted there for work or study. The school asks for a valid Chinese visa page at application, so settle your child's visa status first. Our China visa guide covers the basics, but confirm the right category for a school-age child with the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka.
  • Budget for the full cost. The 2026–2027 fees run from CNY 193,000 to CNY 226,000 a year before lunches (around CNY 15–25 a meal) and other charges, and 2027–2028 fees are not yet published. Our cost of living guide helps with the rest of the family budget.
  • Ask your child's current school in Bangladesh for English-language transcripts and teacher contacts early, since recommendations are submitted online by the teachers.
  • If your child studied in Bangla or English medium with little Chinese, expect the Chinese test. The school's website describes it as a placement test, and starting Chinese lessons now still helps.
  • Apply well before May 2027. Places are first come, first served.
